According to a recent article by Forbes, 47% of Generation Y (also referred to as ‘Millennials are recognized as those born between the early 1980s and early 2000s) workers are involved in a company with less than 100 people. These small businesses have been denoted “start-ups” by the community, and more and more young workers are jumping on board.

The question then becomes, why is the near majority of America’s young workers hopping on board with these types of companies?

Millennials want to know how they will make a positive difference in the world if they join your business” says Deloitte CEO Barry Salzberg.

And from the article:

Many of the recent graduates I spoke with chose start-ups because they felt doing so let them contribute meaningfully to a business while also seeing end results – something consultants rarely get to do. They also pointed to the non-hierarchical structure of start-ups, which many said enabled them to learn a broad range of skills very quickly, rather than specializing in one area as entry-level finance jobs permit. Most importantly, however, they spoke about impact, and a desire to create value in their lives and the lives of others.”

Millennials were also the first generation to grow up with the internet, where many new start-ups find their niche.

However, the start-up life isn’t all fun and games.

It has been documented that 75% of start-ups end up failing, and many start-up employees face an uncertain future. The Harvard Business Review notes start-ups frequently pay average salaries 30 percent below market norms.

The main question for Millennials considering joining a start-up though remains: “if not now, when?”

We also understand the long-term goals. If your start-up is one of the unfortunate 75 percent, the skills practiced and learned by you and your employees is almost immeasurable in how broad it truly is.
